ATL/PHILIPS

Philips has come a long way from a small, family-run company that started in the late 1800s. The company nearly went bankrupt a couple times in those early days, back when its main products involved radios and electrical lighting.

The past decade has seen a tremendous amount of consolidation in the ultrasound industry, including the acquisition of ATL Ultrasound by Philips Medical Systems. But just like many of the other acquisitions of small companies by one of the industry leaders, the ATL brand name is still well known and its products are still in wide use around the world. The most popular models produced by ATL are the HDI line of ultrasound machines, including the ATL HDI 1000,ATL HDI 3000 & ATL HDI 5000.

Originally founded as part of the Japan Radio Company and then split off as Medical and Physical Institute Co. Ltd., there have obviously been major changes in the systems produced by Aloka over the decades. The company launched the first commercially available ultrasound system for diagnostic use in 1960, and then in the 1970s took on the Aloka name, which means "Ray of Hope".

SONOSITE

Even though the SonoSite name is only about 15 years old, the company has emerged as one of the leading manufacturers of portable ultrasound equipment. SonoSite was originally spun off from ATL Ultrasound (which was later acquired by Philips Healthcare) and the company introduced its first line of ultrasound systems in the late 1990s. Now the SonoSite name has become synonymous with portable ultrasound systems, and the company's product like the  Sono Site Nano Maxx, Sono Site M-Turbo and Sono Site Micro maxx are in wide use around the world.
